WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--U.S. wholesale inventories rose more than expected
in September, while demand for goods also remained strong.

inventories climbed 0.8% to a seasonally adjusted $404.55 billion, after
rising by an upwardly revised 0.7% during August, the Commerce Department
said Wednesday. Originally, inventories in August were reported to have
posted a 0.1% increase.
September's gain in inventories exceeded Wall Street analyst expectations
for a 0.3% advance.
Sales of U.S. wholesalers jumped 1.3% in September to a seasonally adjusted
$366.83 billion, after increasing a revised 0.8% in August. Originally,
August sales were estimated to have gained 0.4%.
The amount of goods on hand relative to sales held fell to a new record low.
The inventory-to-sales ratio measures how many months it would take for a
firm to deplete its current inventory. In September, the ratio was at 1.10;
after remaining at 1.11 over the previous four months.
On a year-over-year basis, sales were 9.9% higher, with inventories up 5.2%
since September 2006.
Wholesalers' inventories of durable goods - meant to last three or more
years - increased 0.7% in September, after gaining 0.6% in August.
Automotive stocks rose 1.0% after jumping 2.2% in August.
Durable goods sales rose 0.3%, after climbing 1.0% in August. Fura sales
increased 4.1%, compared with 2.4% increase the month before.
Non-durable goods inventories increased 1.0% in September, though petroleum
fell 1.5%.
September non-durable goods sales rose 2.1%, with petroleum sales up 7.7%.
